At dawn on Sunday, the 17 Feb. Revolutionary Libya Shield brigades launched a multi-pronged attack on the Zintan Qaaqaa, Sawaiq and Madani militia controlling Tripoli’s International Airport, and other key buildings. The Libya Shield brigades are determined to force the Zintan militia out of Tripoli after handing their heavy weapons to a joint Interior and Defence ministries body. Heavy clashes continued on Monday leaving 7 dead and dozens wounded. Meanwhile, clashes intensified between the pro-Hafter forces and the 17 Feb. Revolutionary brigades. The UN had anticipated the clashes and started a partial evacuation of its staff in Libya, last week, as the build-up for the Tripoli battle was underway. The Libya Shield claimed on its website that it controls large sections of the airport and that they have evicted the Qaaqaa brigade from some of its bases such as the Yermouk base. The 17 Feb. offensive was named Libya’s Dawn in response to Hafter’s Dignity Operation that was launched last May.
